Race and Rights, 1940-1970

The focus of the course will be on the thinking, training, tactics, debates and philosophies of the known and less known impactful persons from that time.  The course will use major events from this time period such as the Freedom Rides, Montgomery Bus Boycott, student sit-ins, Birmingham boycott, March on Washington, Freedom Summer, Selma and several others as context for class discussion.  Discussion will be based on readings handed out and assigned by the instructor.  Among topics to be discussed are non-violence, Black Nationalism, Black Power, and community and group organizing.  When necessary, the instructor will provide information by direct lecture, but the greater part of class time will be used for discussion.
