Before it Was Leisure World, it was the Edmonson Farm
As you make your way around the Leisure World community, have you ever wondered why there is an Edmonson Room in Clubhouse II? Why does a historical marker near our main entrance designate the area as Edmonson Park? Why has a mutual near our Norbeck Road entrance has been renamed Edmonson Farm?
On Thursday, February 27th, at 2 p.m.in the Clubhouse II Auditorium, you can learn the answers to these questions and many more. The co-presidents of the Edmonson Historical Society, Dianne Bradley and Juanita Sealy-Williams, will cover the historical foundations of our community and the Edmonson family’s legacy as it relates to Leisure World and to the abolitionist movement in our country. This presentation is held jointly with the Center for Lifelong Learning.
The Edmonson family, all born as enslaved people and all eventually obtaining their freedom, participated in daring escapes, pursued higher education, and helped found our nation’s civil rights movement in the 1840’s.
This presentation is free, with registration required beginning on Tuesday February 11 by calling or visiting either Lifestyle office.
