Annual Meeting & Reception by the Center for Lifelong Learning

The Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL – www.cllmd.com) will be holding two events in May to which the whole LW community is cordially invited.  First, on Monday May 4, CLL will hold its annual meeting for members at 1 pm, followed by a special lecture that is designed to demonstrate the kind(s) of lectures and courses sponsored by the organization. Second, on May 18, CLL will hold a reception for past, current, and potential instructors for CLL courses.

The annual meeting of CLL will inform members about the year’s activities of the group and talk about future plans.  There will be voting for the new CLL Board.  Anyone interested in potentially joining CLL is most welcome to attend.

Following the meeting, at 2:00 pm, CLL will present a special lecture entitled: “Hearing in Aging Humans – Lessons from Herring, Salmon, and Goldfish.”  The lecture, which is open to anyone and not restricted to people who attend the annual meeting, will be given by LW resident Dr. Arthur N. Popper (who also happens to be one of the authors of this article!), professor emeritus and research professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Maryland.  Popper has been studying hearing, evolution of hearing, and effects of noise on hearing, for over 40 years.  He has published several hundred scientific papers as well as over 50 books on hearing, and related topics. In his lecture, Popper will discuss his research on hearing, as well as provide a general understanding into why and how hearing changes as we get older or are exposed to loud sounds in the environment.

CLL is always looking to add new courses and instructors to its repertoire in order to broaden education opportunities for the LW community.  It also wants to express its thanks to former and current instructors. CLL is particularly looking to provide opportunities for CLL members with backgrounds in academia, teaching, or other professions who are potentially interested in giving single lectures or short (4-6 class) courses on topics that might be of interest to LW residents.  Recent courses offered by CLL include: TITLES.

Thus, CLL will be hosting a wine and cheese reception at 4 pm on May 18th for people to meet, talking about their teaching experiences in CLL, learn about how courses are arranged, and to discuss possible courses.  Anyone interested in attending should contact Fred Shapiro, chair of CLL, for an invitation.
