“Rebellions and Insurrections in American History”

What was behind our nation’s major conflicts? What is the difference between a rebellion and an insurrection?  The Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL) is sponsoring a class that will address these questions in five sessions starting on Thursday, October 17 through Thursday, November 14, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in Clubhouse 1.

Rebellions and Insurrections in American History will examine five significant conflicts in U.S. history to explore their similarities and differences and to better understand why and how they started. The class will also consider what constitutes an appropriate government response.

The five significant conflicts to be considered are: Bacon’s Rebellion 1676; Shays Rebellion 1786; Civil War 1861; Blair Mountain Insurrection 1921; January 6th Insurrection.  In addition, the final class will consider the philosophies of action of Henry Thoreau, Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., and Frantz Fanon.

The instructor, Paul Levy, will provide primary and secondary source documents with portions assigned to be read before each class.  Discussion will be emphasized and the class will be a safe space for the expression of diverse viewpoints.

Paul Levy has been a very active teacher for the CLL.  He holds three degrees from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and spent many years as a teacher and school administrator at secondary and college levels.

Come enjoy history and discussion! To register for this class, call or go to Lifestyle in Clubhouse I or II.
