Good Deed Day

Leisure World Joins the Greater Washington community, along with hundreds of thousands of volunteers from around the world, in a day of service on April 29th.   Three projects will be observed here in Leisure World. The first is the annual collection of food for the needy and homeless in Clubhouse I. The second is the return of the Jewish Day School students to coach our seniors about current communication and computer technology in Clubhouse II. The third will take place at the April 8th brunch of the Jewish War Veterans Post 567, collecting food and donations for MANNA.

This is the fifth year that Leisure World has participated in good Deeds Day with donations to MANNA to feed the needy as its goal. Here in our region Good Deeds Day is organized by the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington with support from a broad range of interfaith and community oriented organizations.

Sponsored by the Jewish Residents of Leisure World, volunteers will be manning a table in Clubhouse I to collect containers of food for donation to MANNA. Residents are urged to take a few cans, jars or cartons of food or a monetary donation to the Clubhouse during the hours starting at 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM. If you care to volunteer to man the table, you can contact Miriam Kitty Atkins at  miriamatkin29@gmail.com

Technology Support will take place in the Computer Center and New Activities Room in Clubhouse II.  This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Lifelong Learning and the Computer Learning Center. Students from the Jewish Day Schools will work one-on-one with seniors to cope with their smartphones, tablets, laptops, as well as the computers in the center. The students have become a regular feature here in Leisure World, satisfying many seniors who need that extra bit of help to master their iPhones and computers. At the same time, the students earn service credits at their schools.

To enable the scheduling of students and seniors during the two one hour sessions starting at 10:00 AM and ending at 1noon, residents are asked to sign up at the E&R office in Clubhouse II. Indicate on the sign-in sheet, the technology in which you are interested and the session for which you will be available.

To increase the donations to MANNA, the officers of the Jewish War Veterans Post 567 have added this charitable effort to the brunch that will be held Sunday, April 8th. Attendees are being asked to bring donations of food containers or a monetary donation to the charity.

All in all, Good Deeds Day brings the good intentions and concern of Leisure World residents to those in need. Of sustenance or knowledge
