Animals in the Civil War

Historian Brad Stone will share fascinating stories about the vital roles animals played during the Civil War on Friday, June 12 at 2 p.m. in Clubhouse I. Stone is the author of “Hooves, Paws, and Claws for the Cause: Animals in the Civil War” published by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.
Drawing from his book, Stone will highlight the heroic exploits of dogs, cats, horses, pigs, camels, bears, badgers, bald eagles, and many more during this national struggle. There were many remarkable ways animals supported the soldiers and sailors they served with during the war. Stone will also talk about the lasting legacy these animals created for our national defense and our everyday lives.
About the Presenter
Stone had a long public affairs career with the U.S. government and now volunteers as a docent at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, MD and aboard the U.S.S. Constellation in Baltimore Harbor.
He serves on the Board of Directors for the Monocacy National Battlefield Foundation and several of his presentations have been broadcast nationally by C-SPAN3 American History TV.
